Acting as An Intrapreneur When Project Managing

When it comes to project management there are a number of different roles that a project manager is expected to undertake with the project. One of these roles can be acting as an intrapreneur. This means working as an internal change agent in the project and using all of those essential project management skills gained during a qualification like APM PPQ in order to foster a culture within the company where there is innovation. The project manager is often in a unique position where they can act as a bridge between different departments whilst gathering diverse perspectives and driving new initiatives forward.

Intrapreneurship is essentially working as an entrepreneur within an existing organisation and finding ways to help drive new visions and concepts.

How does the project manager have an advantage in this situation?

Experts in APM project management, such as those at Parallel Project Training remind project managers that they will pick up a wide range of diverse skills and knowledge that will actually help to make them uniquely suited for an intrapreneurial role, as well as the role of project manager. These include:

  • Having a good understanding of the structure of an organisation and its processes
  • An ability to build teams that are cross-functional
  • Having experience when it comes to managing resources and budgets
  • Comfort in ambiguity and risk-taking

Identify opportunities for innovation

As a project manager, it will be important to look for areas where your organisation can innovate. There are a number of different ways in which this can be achieved, such as improving existing processes or products, developing new ones, or entering new markets. It is important to keep your eyes open to spot areas where innovation might improve things.

Build support for new ideas

In order to build support for any new ideas that you may have you will need to outline your strategies for pitching the innovativeness of the idea to the management team. When this is done right you should be able to gain buy-in from stakeholders and also secure resources for new projects, without which your new ideas will simply not be able to move forward.

Lead innovative teams

If you want to be a real intrapreneur, then it is important to build and lead a high-performing and innovative team. To foster creativity and create a team that is capable of chance rather than resistant to it, you need to make sure that you have good lines of communication open at all times. Lead by letting your team do what they do best but being there for them. This way, they will feel open to offering suggestions and providing solutions when needed.

Measure your success and learn from failures

You need to make sure that you have metrics in place for innovation. You should celebrate every success, including the little ones and ensure that you learn from your failures so that you don’t make the same mistakes again. A culture of continuous improvement is essential to success and being an intrapreneur is one way to ensure this happens.
